Religiosity, borrower gender and loan losses in microfinance institutions: a global evidence

We examine the impact of religious beliefs on loan repayments in 770 microfinance institutions (MFIs) across 65 countries over period 2006–2018. find robust evidence a negative relationship between religiosity and losses MFIs. also that is stronger for MFIs Protestant-dominated than Catholic-dominated countries. Moreover, improves operational self-sufficiency through reduction losses. does not improve repayment behaviour women borrowers, but it reduces size per borrower. Overall, our suggests although religiosity-induced lender-risk aversion, borrowers. use several approaches to evaluate results effects endogeneity.
